Into the Wild Bus 142

Description

1946 International Harvester K-5

History

Originally this was a school bus before being used for the military. It operated under the Fairbanks City Transit System and numbered Bus 142. In the 1950s, they were housing employees at an old mine where they made an access road from the highway. Three of these International buses got brought out by a Cat Bulldozer. In 1961, they took two buses out of the mine and left #142 abandoned. Rivers and wildlife separated this bus from society. A hiker named Christopher McCandless traveled here from California to live in the wilderness and try to survive. However, in the summer season, the rivers were too dangerous to cross. So Chris went back to the bus and died of food poisoning. Others would try this adventure and would be seriously injured or killed. On 6/18/2020 The Alaska National Guard and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources airlifted Bus 142 which was taken to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Engineering Building to be restored.
