Alaska Railroad #1
Description
Operated as a narrow gauge locomotive for the Panama Canal Commission as #802. Alaska Engineering Commission purchased #802 in 1917 and had it operate in the State of Alaska as #6 assisting in the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Seven years after the completion of the Alaska Railroad in 1923, #6 got a new set of wheels to operate on standard gauge track as a yard goat for yard operations in the Anchorage Yard until being stored after diesel locomotives came onto the railroad. When the Alaska Railroad inaugurated the Aurora Streamliner in 1947, #6 operated next to #1050 pulling the streamliner as a ceremony. Anchorage Kiwanas Club laid track down on Fifth Avenue in downtown Anchorage for children of any age to ride on. It earned a pedestal outside the Anchorage Depot in the middle of the parking lot in honor of all its service and got renumbered #1
