Alaska Railroad #556
Description
First served for the US Army during WWII and served in Africa and Europe. This was called a Gypsy Rose Lee locomotive and got named after a famous strip tease. After the war was over, these got shipped back to the United States and went to work for the Alaska Railroad hauling Freight and passengers between Seward and Fairbanks. While pulling a freight train with #559 as the lead locomotive, #556 wrecked on its side causing minor damage. When the Anchorage Roundhouse caught on fire in 1951, #556 was in critical condition, and took a year of repairs before it could go back into operation until retirement in 1959. The City of Anchorage, AK finally bought #556 and displays it on the corner of Ninth and E streets
