History

When two-wheel drive vehicles weren't reliable during winter seasons, they would need chains to prevent sliding. CJ8 Vans like this were driven 51,000 miles in the City of Fairbanks delivering and picking up roughly 6,333,600 pieces of mail without chains. They also had heaters added to keep the mail and driver warm. This type of delivery vehicle could fit where other delivery vans couldn't. After ten years of service, USPS 3280009 was retired and is on the lawn at the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry.
