Description

Alaska Railroad #1500

Built in 1952 by Electro-Motor Division
F7A
16-cylinder diesel-electric locomotive
4 axles

History

Acquired directly to the Alaska Railroad with other F7 A and B units to help modernize and replace the steam locomotives in the early 1950's. They were much cleaner, faster, and didn't pollute the air like steam locomotives. These were excellent for streamliners and operated between Seward and Fairbanks. It was used in a piece of artwork when changing from a federal to a state-owned railroad. This was one of the locomotives used in Andrei Konchalovsky's 1985 movie “Runaway Train”. After serving the Alaska Railroad all its life, #1500 finally retired not only as the first but also the last F7A to operate on the Alaska Railroad and was donated to the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry.
