White Pass & Yukon Route #195

When Japan invaded the Aleutian Island on 6/7/1942, the United States Government feared that Japan would bomb the west coast resulting in the United States Military leasing the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad to participate in the construction of the Alcan Military Highway (Currently the Alaska Highway). There were eleven Baldwin Class 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotives brought up from the manufacturer in Pennsylvania to Alaska including #195. At the end of the war, #190-197 were sold to the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad serving between Canada and the United States while #198-200 were sold to the Casa Grande-Sasaul Railway in Peru. #191, #193, #194, and #197 got scrapped as #196 was held in storage while #190, #192, & #195 continued operating from 1951-1960. It was decided in 1962 that #195 belonged to the City of Skagway, AK for stationary display next to the Skagway Museum.
